Today, Poker Central and the Global Poker Index (GPI) announced that the second annual Global Poker Awards will take place on Friday, March 6, 2020 in the PokerGO Studio at ARIA Resort & Casino. After the success of the first global awards program, the event has expanded and will feature the presentation of more than 20 awards as well as new categories such as the Player’s Choice Award for Best All-Around Poker Player. The festivities will be streamed live on Poker Central’s direct-to-consumer OTT service, PokerGO.
- Though it will not be official for another day, Alex Foxen has won the 2019 Global Poker Index (GPI) Player of the Year award. Foxen used a strong December to finish the year with 3,806.09 points, edging out a quartet of poker players who eclipsed the 3,600-point mark: Sean Winter, Bryn Kenney, Kahle Burns, and Stephen Chidwick.
- Current GPI Standings. Could 2019 be the year of the Australian poker player? Australian poker pro Robert Campbell topped the WSOP POY race, and his fellow countryman Kahle Burns currently leads the GPI POY leaderboard. If the standings remain unchanged throughout December, Australia will have two POY titles this year.

The ceremony will bring together poker’s most talented players, personalities, and commentators vying for awards that include new and returning categories such as the GPI Poker Player of the Year, Event of the Year, Industry Person of the Year, and People’s Choice Award for Poker Personality of the Year. Last year’s winners included Ali Imsirovic, Justin Bonomo, Maria Ho, and Sarah Herring.
“The Global Poker Index team is hard at work on this expanded Global Poker Awards event, filled with new awards and experiences for attendees and the viewing audience,” said Eric Danis, GPI president. “We’re delighted that the Global Poker Awards have become a repeating annual event that is growing in scope and significance among the poker industry.”
“The first annual Global Poker Awards were a tremendous success and an important moment for us as an industry to recognize our best and brightest,” said Sampson Simmons, president of Poker Central. “The second annual event is an important opportunity for Poker Central to once again partner with the Global Poker Index and to stream our community’s biggest night on PokerGO for the fans at home.”
The Global Poker Awards were launched in 2019 by combining multiple awards programs, including the GPI’s American Poker Awards and the European Poker Awards, into one star-studded ceremony to celebrate excellence both on and off the felt. Winners of the 2020 awards will be determined via an updated voting process led by a panel of experts in each category, as well as through a system of fan voting in several categories. Further detail on the process will be available in the coming weeks.
Global Poker Index has made all the necessary calculations in its formula and finally confirmed that Alex Foxen is officially the 2019 GPI Player of the Year. What makes this win special is that Foxen has become the first player in history to win this prestigious award in back-to-back seasons, meaning the last two years were dominated by this talented American poker player.
In other words, Foxen made history and will definitely enter many poker books as the first one to do it. But let’s not jump the boat here — maybe he manages to repeat the same success for the third time? Time will tell.
Places 1 Through 5
At the moment of winning the title, Foxen had a total of 3806.09 points and was followed by Sean Winter with 3679.19. Third place belongs to Bryn Kenney, who also had a great year behind him and won a total of 3647.81 points.
Kahle Burns ended fourth with 3641.63 and Stephen Chidwick fifth with 3637.94. As you can see, Foxen had many more points compared to the other four players, who are very close to each other. However, at the start of December 2019, the leaderboard looked nothing like this.
In fact, starting December, it was Burns who had the best score, overtaking Winter along the way. Nevertheless, Winter managed to get back his position, only to see Foxen doing his best and having a great run in December.
All of that resulted in Foxen winning the title, creating back-to-back POY victories.
The GPI doesn’t end its list with the top five players. In fact, the list is quite comprehensive and lengthy. Nevertheless, let’s take a look at places 6-10 on the leaderboard.
Places 6 Through 10
Gpi Poker Awards 2019 Nominees
Sixth place was occupied by Rainer Kempe, who had a total of 3499.77 points, while Sam Greenwood followed him in seventh place with 3487.10 points. German professional poker player Manig Loeser ended eighth with 3434.91, while Timothy Adams had to settle for ninth place with 3377.88.
However, one of the most interesting things about this leaderboard is the difference between the ninth and 10th positions. Namely, Ali Imsirovic, the poker pro from Bosnia, was 0.30 points away from being ninth, as he had a total of 3377.59. Nevertheless, he made it to the top 10.
Foxen’s Achievement In 2019
Foxen managed to earn a total of $6.3 million in 2019 alone, with his biggest cash prize being $1.7 in a 429-entry WPT Five Diamond. He recorded a total of 40 cashes and made it to final tables 22 times.

Although he earned less money compared to 2018 when he managed to earn $6.6 million, the year of 2019 was overall better, as he only recorded 24 cashes in 2018.
It was very exciting to watch Foxen disrupting the leaderboard. Apart from him and three other players, the POY top 20 list was quite different in 2018, meaning only four players managed to remain on the list. Those were Chidwick, 2017 POY winner Adrian Mateos, and Kempe.
